What is ASTM D4060 and Why is Abrasion Resistance Important?

Written by High Performance Coatings | Mar 15, 2023 2:48:53 PM

Abrasion resistance is an important property of coatings because it can affect the durability and longevity of the coating system, particularly in high-traffic areas or areas subject to abrasive wear.  ASTM D4060 is a standard test method that measures the abrasion resistance of coatings by subjecting them to a rotating wheel with abrasive particles.

The ability of a coating to resist abrasion is important because abrasion can cause physical damage to the coating, such as scratching, scuffing, or wearing away of the surface. This can lead to a reduction in the protective properties of the coating, such as its ability to prevent corrosion, weathering, or chemical attack.

In addition, abrasion resistance is particularly important in applications where the coated surface is subject to frequent or prolonged exposure to abrasive materials, such as dirt, sand, or gravel. For example, the top or bottom of a potable water tank where silt, pebbles and rocks are commonplace.  Or heavy forklift traffic on a warehouse or production area floor.  Or processing equipment where mixers or screw conveyors are involved.  The list goes on and on.

By measuring the abrasion resistance of coatings according to ASTM D4060, manufacturers and users can select coatings that are better suited for specific applications, and can ensure that coatings will maintain their protective properties and corrosion protection over time.  For help determining which abrasion resistant products might meet your specific project requirements, reach out to a High Performance Coating Consultant.
